The Capital City of the Lone Star State has more restaurants than people realize, and an increasingly health-conscious population. So, we decided to combine our two favorite topics - good eating and eating that is good for you - into one book. Dining Lite in Austin was created to help inform and educate diners about the variety of healthy selections available at many area restaurants.
We wanted to present as much information as possible about which nutrition facts most people want to have at their finger tips. In that effort, we decided to provide calories, fat, percentage of calories from fat and sodium for low-fat menu items.
During the writing of this book we learned how easy it is to be misled about the healthfulness of meals simply by looking at the menu or even by asking the wait staff, chefs and managers. We noticed that many restaurants offered "light" menus that included things like quiche, loaded with butter, eggs and cheese. The term "light" in these cases referred to the weight of the items, i.e. they were not going to be very filling.
The chefs and owners we spoke with were very aware of what makes food taste good, but many were uninformed about what makes an item low in fat. Many times we heard the phrase "Our food is all low-fat because we only use olive oil". While olive oil is a healthy oil, it is still 100% fat and contains 14 grams of fat per tablespoon!
Dining Lite in Austin is pocket-sized to encourage you to carry it with you to make healthy choices while dining out. We are sure it will now be easier for you to Dine Lite!
